The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme was developed by Dr Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre and described in his bestselling book, Full Catastrophe Living. The heart of the programme is a series of meditation practices that are designed to bring mindfulness to the body, thoughts and feelings. The awareness this fosters informs the whole of life, especially how we respond to challenges and difficulties. It’s not a matter of learning ‘relaxation techniques’: mindfulness involves learning to face challenges and difficulties with greater poise and resourcefulness. How Mindfulness Helps
A large body of research shows that mindfulness training and the MBSR programme helps you to be more emotionally aware, more attentive and more fully engaged, putting aside preoccupations and waking up to what is happening right now. Studies at Harvard and elsewhere show that just eight weeks of training brings a significant increase in brain grey matter concentration in regions of the brain associated with sustained attention, emotional regulation and perspective taking. Growing Interest in Mindfulness
MBSR is the model for other courses that apply mindfulness to specific conditions.
